Use Table Styles

Word 2007 provides built-in styles that can be applied to quickly format your table. Table styles are a collection of formatting including borders, shading, font colour etc that can be applied at the click of button.

The default table style is the Table Normal. This just includes a basic black border around all the cells.

Apply a Table Style

  1. Select the table
  2. Click the Design tab under Table Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click on the style you want to use from the Table Styles gallery
  4. Click on the More button to see the full collection of available styles

Remove a Table Style

If a style is no longer required it can be removed.

  1. Select the table
  2. Click the Design tab under Table Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click on the More button in the Table Styles gallery
  4. Select the Clear option

Use the Table Style Options

Table styles apply formatting to the different elements of a table. The way your table is formatted depends not only on the style you choose, but also the table style options you specify.

Use the table style options to tell Word where the headers and totals are in your table so that they can be formatted appropriately.

  1. Select the table
  2. Click the Design tab under Table Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Select the required options from the table styles group

    Header Row: Applies special formatting to the headers in the first row of the table

    Total Row: Applies special formatting to the totals in the last row of the table

    First/Last Column: Applies special formatting to the first or last columns of the table. Applied when headers are used in the first column, or totals are used in the last column

    Banded Rows/Columns: Formats the odd and even rows or columns of the table differently. Used to make the table easier to read

Create a New Table Style

You can create a new table style and specify your own formatting. This option is useful if you need to adhere to corporate guides on formatting such as fonts and colours.

  1. Select the table
  2. Click the Design tab under Table Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click on the More button in the Table Styles gallery
  4. Select the New Table Style option
  5. The Create New Style from Formatting dialogue box appears

  6. Enter a Name:
  7. for the style
  8. Select the section of the table that you want to format from the Apply formatting to: drop down list
  9. Select the required formatting options. Click the Format button for further options such as Table Properties and Paragraph formatting
  10. Choose the Only in this documentoption to restrict the table style to the current document only, or use this document as a template for others by choosing the New document based on this template option
  11. Click Ok

You can modify an existing table style by right mouse clicking on the style in the gallery and selecting Modify Table Style from the shortcut menu.
