Add a Watermark to a Document

Add a watermark to a document to display text such as confidential or draft on the background of a page. This text is discreet and does not obscure the page content.

Pictures such as a logo can also be used as watermarks in a document.

Add a Watermark

  1. Click the Page Layout tab on the ribbon
  2. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group
  3. Add a watermark to a document

    A list of watermarks is displayed showing a preview of how they would look when applied

  4. Select the watermark you want to use
  5. The watermark is applied to every page of the document

Create your own Watermark

If none of the built-in watermarks fit your needs, you can create your own watermark.

  1. Click the Page Layout tab on the ribbon
  2. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group
  3. Select Custom Watermark
  4. Create a custom watermark

  5. Select whether you want to create a Picture Watermark or Text Watermark
  6. Apply the required settings
  7. You can enter your own text for a watermark using the Text: field

  8. Click Ok

Save a Custom Watermark

If you have created your own watermark you may want to reuse it again in future documents. This can be done by saving the watermark in the gallery.

To access the watermark on a page you need to open the header or footer area of the page.

  1. Click the Insert tab on the ribbon
  2. Click the Header button in the Header & Footer group and select Edit Header
  3. The header area of the document opens. Click on the watermark to select it
  4. Click the Page Layout tab of the Ribbon
  5. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group
  6. Select Save Selection to Watermark Gallery
  7. Save a watermark

  8. Enter a Name: for the watermark
  9. Select a Category: from the list or create your own
  10. Click the Save in: drop down menu and choose to save the watermark in the Building Blocks file making it available to all documents, or only to documents using this template
  11. Click Ok
  12. The watermark is saved and can be reused by selecting it from the Watermark gallery

Remove a Watermark

If a watermark is no longer required it can be removed.

  1. Click the Page Layout tab on the ribbon
  2. Click the Watermark button in the Page Background group
  3. Select Remove Watermark
