Formatting Pictures

Word 2007 includes plenty of features to allow you to format a picture after it has been inserted. These include cropping, recolouring and applying special effects.

Crop a Picture

Cropping is used to trim the sides of a picture. This is useful when you only want to use a portion of the picture.

  1. Click on the picture to select it
  2. Click the Crop button in the Size group of the Format contextual tab on the Ribbon
  3. Crop button on the Ribbon

  4. Crop handles appear around the edges of the graphic. Click and drag the handles in to trim the necessary sides

  6. Word crops the picture. Click the Crop button again to turn off the cropping tool

Recolor a Picture

There are a variation of colours you can use for your pictures in Word 2007. Popular colours are grayscale or washout.

  1. Click on the picture to select it
  2. Click the Recolor button in the Adjust group of the Format contextual tab on the Ribbon
  3. A list of colour options appears. Select the colour you want to use

    Click More Variations for even more colours, or Set Transparent Colour to set a colour in the picture you want to be able to see through.

Change the Picture Style

Word 2007 comes with some built-in styles that change the appearance of your graphic at the click of a button.

  1. Select the picture
  2. Select the style you want to use from the Styles gallery in the Picture Styles group of the Format contextual tab on the Ribbon

Apply Special Effects

Special effects such as glow, reflection, shadow and bevel can be applied to your Word pictures.

  1. Select the picture
  2. Click the Picture Effects button in the Picture Styles group of the Format contextual tab on the Ribbon
  3. Select the effects you want to apply from the list and then the submenu that appears

    As you point to each effect from the list, Word previews the picture with the efect applied

Change Picture Brightness and Contrast

  1. Select the picture
  2. Click on the Brightness or Contrast button in the Adjust group on the Ribbon

  5. As you point to each option frm the list, Word previews the picture with the brightness or contrast applied
