Style a Table of Contents

After inserting a table of contents it can be styled to fit in with the document, e.g. to match the heading styles. A building block entry can also be created for a table of contents, so that the style can be reused in other documents.

Style a Table of Contents

  1. Click on the table of contents
  2. Click the References button on the Ribbon
  3. Click the Table of Contents button and select Insert Table of Contents
  4. Table of Contents dialogue box

  5. Click the Modify button
  6. The Style dialogue box lists the TOC styles available to the document

  7. Select the TOC style that you want to format and click Modify
  8. Format the style using the options in the Formatting panel, or click the Format button for more detailed options
  9. Modify a TOC style

  10. Click Ok to save the changes to the style
  11. Click Ok to close the Style dialogue box
  12. Click Ok to close the Table of Contents dialogue box
  13. A message appears asking if you want to replace the selected table of contents. Click Yes
  14. Replace the selected table of contents

Create a Building Block Entry for the TOC Styles

  1. Select the table of contents
  2. Click the References button on the Ribbon
  3. Click the Table of Contents button and select Save Selection to Table of Contents Gallery
  4. Create a new table of contents building block

  5. Enter a name for the table of contents style
  6. Click the Save in: list arrow and select Building Blocks to make the style available to all Word documents, or the template being used to distribute it to specific documents only
