Create Footnotes and Endnotes

Create footnotes and endnotes to add notes about text in the document. Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes appear at the end of the document.

Footnotes and endnotes are made up of a note reference mark and the note text. The note reference mark is usually a number that appears next to the text being referred to. The note text appears at the bottom of the page for footnotes, and end of the document for endnotes.

Create a Footnote or Endnote

  1. Click in the document next to the text you want to add further information about
  2. Click the References tab on the Ribbon
  3. Click the Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote button
  4. Type the note text you want to use

You can view the footnote or endnote text in a screentip preventing you having to scroll to the end of the page or document to view the text.

Hover the mouse pointer over the note reference mark you want to view and the screentip will be displayed.
