Text Formatting

Font formatting is used to change the look and feel of the text on a page. You can change the font type, size, colour and add text effects.

Change the Font Type

The font type is the style in which the text is written. There is an extensive list of fonts available in Word 2003.

  1. Select the text you want to format
  2. Click the Font list arrow on the Formatting toolbar
  3. A list of fonts appears. Each font is displayed in the format of how it will look when applied.

Change the Font Size

Text can be made larger for more emphasis or smaller to make it more subtle.

  1. Select the text you want to format
  2. Click the Size list arrow on the toolbar
  3. Altering the font size


    Enter the number you want in the Size box and press Enter

Apply Font Effects

Effects can be applied to text within Word for greater emphasis.

  1. Select the text you want to add an effect to
  2. Click the required button on the toolbar
  3. Text effects buttons

    Ctrl + B


    Ctrl + I


    Ctrl + U


Change the Font Colour

Changing the colour of text and really make it stand out from other text on the page

  1. Select the text you want to colour
  2. Click the Font Color list arrow on the toolbar

  4. Select the colour you want to use
  5. If you do not like any of the colours on offer, click More Colors for a greater choice including the ability to enter your own RGB value

The Font Dialogue Box

For a full list of text effects and formatting options use the Font dialogue box.

  1. Select the text you want to format
  2. Click Format > Font
  3. Or

    Press Ctrl + D

  4. Select all the formatting settings you want to use
  5. The Preview box shows how the text will appear

  6. Click Ok

To keep the formatting settings as standard for all future documents, click the Default button. This will prevent having to format the text each time you create a new document.
