Format a Table of Contents

You can format a table of contents to get the appearance that you want. Word provides some in-built formatting templates to choose from, or you can format the table by modifying the TOC styles.

Format a Table of Contents

The quickest and easiest way of formatting a table of contents is to select one of the in-built table designs.

  1. Click on the table of contents you want to format to select it
  2. Click Insert > Reference > Index and Tables
  3. Select the Table of Contents tab
  4. Click the Formats: list arrow and select a design to apply
  5. Select a format for the table of contents

  6. Click Ok

Customise a TOC Style

The best way of changing the appearance of a table of contents is to customise the TOC styles. The styles format all the table of contents in the document. They can also be saved to a template and transferred to other documents to quickly and consistently format table of contents.

  1. Click Insert > Reference > Index and Tables
  2. Select the Table of Contents tab
  3. Click the Formats: list arrow and select From Template
  4. Click the Modify button

  6. Select the TOC style that you want to format and click Modify
  7. The TOC style numbers represent the outline levels of a document. The default table of contents only shows levels 1-3

  8. Format the style using the options in the Formatting section of the Modify Styles dialogue box
  9. Or

    Click the Format button for more detailed formatting options

  10. Check the Add to template box to save the style to the template for use in future documents
  11. Uncheck the Automatically update box if you do not want the style to automatically update with the formatting changes made directly to the table of contents in the document
  12. Click Ok to save the changes to the TOC style
  13. Click Ok to close the Style dialogue box
  14. Click Ok to close the Index and Tables dialogue box
  15. A message appears asking if you want to replace the selected table of contents. Click Yes
  16. Replace the selected table of contents
