Grid and Guides

Grids and guides are two very helpful PowerPoint 2007 tools when it comes to positioning objects. They can be used as another method of aligning and distributing objects.

Display/hide the grid

The grid consists of horizontal and vertical lines line graph paper to assist with positioning objects.

  1. Click the View tab on the Ribbon
  2. Click the Gridlines checkbox in the Show/Hide group

    The gridlines can also be shown by pressing Shift + F9.

Turn on/off Snap to Grid

The Snap to Grid feature is turned on by default in PowerPoint 2007. It causes objects to snap to the nearest gridlines when moving them.

  1. Click the Arrange button in the Drawing group of the Home tab
  2. Select Align and click Grid Settings from the menu
  3. The Grid and Guides dialogue box appears

  4. Click the Snap Objects to Grid check box

Display/hide drawing guides

Guides perform a similar job to gridlines, but can be moved around the slide giving you greater flexibility when positioning objects.

  1. Click the Arrange button in the Drawing group of the Home tab
  2. Select Align and click Grid Settings from the menu
  3. Click the Display drawing guides on screen check box in the Grid and Guides dialogue box
  4. Click Ok
  5. One vertical and one horizontal guide appear on the slide. Click and drag the guides to move them.

    Press the Ctrl key whilst dragging a guide to create another drawing guide.

Gridlines and drawing guides do not appear in a presentations slide show view or when printed.
