Formatting Shapes

Shapes can be formatted by using the Shape Styles group of commands. You can change the fill colour, outline and effect of a shape.

Apply a shape style

A shape style is a collection of formatting commands that can be applied with one click. It is the quickest and easiest way to change the appearance of a shape.

  1. Select the shape that you want to format
  2. Click on the Format contextual tab under Drawing Tools
  3. Select a style from the Shape Styles gallery. Click the More button to view all available shape styles

    A shape style can also be applied by clicking the Quick Styles button in the Drawing group of the Home tab.

Change the fill colour of a shape

You can change or remove the fill colour of a shape you insert in PowerPoint.

  1. Select the shape you want to format
  2. Click on the Format contextual tab under Drawing Tools
  3. Click the Shape Fill button from the Shape Styles group
  4. The Shape Fill menu appears

  5. Select a fill colour from the list or click;
  • No Fill to remove the fill colour
  • More Fill Colors to select from a wider selection of fill colours in the Colors dialogue box
  • Picture to fill the shape with a picture you have on file
  • Gradient to fill the shape with a colour that gradually changes into another
  • Texture to fill the shape with a texture

Change the outline of a shape

You can add, change or remove a shapes outline

  1. Select the shape you want to format
  2. Click on the Format contextual tab under Drawing Tools
  3. Click the Shape Outline button from the Shape Styles group
  4. The Shape Outline menu appears

  5. Select an outline colour from the list or click;
  • No Outline to remove the outline
  • More Outline Colors to select from a wider selection of outline colours in the Colors dialogue box
  • Weight to change the thickness of an outline
  • Dashes to change the look of an outline

Apply a Shape Effect

Effects such as glow, reflection or shadow can be applied to a shape

  1. Select the shape you want to format
  2. Click on the Format contextual tab under Drawing Tools
  3. Click the Shape Effects button from the Shape Styles group
  4. The Shape Effects menu appears

  5. Select a category of effect and then select an option from the list
