Drawing Shapes

A variety of shapes can be drawn in PowerPoint 2007 such as squares, lines and also shapes for use in flowchart diagrams.

Draw a square or circle

  1. Click the Shapes button in the Drawing group of the Home tab
  2. Inserting shapes
  3. Select the required shape from the menu. Click the Rectangle shape to draw a square, and the Oval shape to draw a circle
  4. The mouse pointer changes to a cross-hair Crosshair

  5. Click and drag the mouse pointer to draw the shape, releasing the mouse button when finished
  6. To draw a square or circle, hold down the Shift key whilst drawing the rectangle or oval shapes to constrain their proportions

    Hold the Ctrl key whilst drawing to draw the shape from the centre outwards.

Draw a line or arrow

  1. Click the Shapes button in the Drawing group of the Home tab
  2. Select the line or arrow shape from the menu
  3. The mouse pointer changes to a cross-hair

  4. Click and drag the mouse pointer to draw the line or arrow, releasing the mouse button when the line is finished
  5. Hold the Shift key whilst drawing to draw the line at 15 degree intervals.

    Hold the Ctrl key whilst drawing to draw the line extending from its midpoint outwards.

Adjust an Shape

Many Shapes have an adjustment handle that can be used to adjust a unique aspect of the shape. The adjustment handles appear as yellow diamond shapes and are only visible when the Shape is selected.

  1. Select the AutoShape you want to adjust
  2. Click the adjustment handle and drag to resize

Add text to a shape

Any closed shape can have text inserted into it.

  1. Select the shape that you wish to add text to
  2. Type the text you wish to add

After adding text to a shape you may wish to alter the settings associated with the shapes text such as the margins, or to rotate the text within the shape

  1. Select the shape containing the text
  2. Right click on the shape and select Format AutoShape from the Shortcut menu that appears
  3. The Format Shape dialogue box appears. Click the Text Box menu on the left
  4. Change shape text settings

  5. Set the required options
  6. Click Ok
