Bullets and Numbering

Bulleted lists can be formatted in a number of ways including changing the size, shape and colour of the bullets.

Formatting bulleted lists in Normal view will only affect the list you are currently working on. Format the bulleted list using the master slide for your changes to affect the whole presentation.

Change the bullet type

  1. Select the line(s) with the bullet styles you want to change
  2. Click the Bullets button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab
  3. Change the bullet type
  4. Select the Bullet character that you want to use
  5. Click Bullets and Numbering from the list instead to be able to adjust the bullets size and colour.

Use a symbol bullet

If the selection of bullet types is not enough, you can use any symbol for a bullet.

  1. Select the line(s) with the bullet styles you want to change
  2. Click the Bullets button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab
  3. Click Bullets and Numbering from the list
  4. The Bullets and Numbering dialogue box appears

  5. Click the Customize button
  6. Change bullet to a symbol

  7. Click the Font drop list arrow and select the font you want
  8. Select the symbol you want to use for a bullet.
  9. A list of recently used symbols, regardless of their font, are displayed along the bottom of the dialogue box

  10. Click Ok
  11. The symbol is added to the list of bullets available for selection

  12. Click Ok

Use a picture bullet

A selection of images are also available for use as bullets.

  1. Select the line(s) with the bullet styles you want to change
  2. Click the Bullets button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab
  3. Click Bullets and Numbering from the list
  4. Click the Picture button in the Bullets and Numbering dialogue box

  5. Select the picture bullet you want to use
  6. Click Ok

It is possible to import your own pictures into the Picture Bullet dialogue box to be used. However, bare in mind that due to the size of the bullet most pictures are unclear.

Apply a numbering style

  1. Select the text or placeholder that you wish to format
  2. Click the Numbering button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab
  3. Using a numbered list

  4. Select the numbering style you want
  5. Click Bullets and Numbering from the list instead to be able to adjust a numbers size, colour or change the number to start the numbering at.

Convert a list to SmartArt

A bulleted list can be converted into a SmartArt graphic to better convey the message being delivered.

  1. Select the placeholder containing the text you wish to convert
  2. Click the Convert to SmartArt button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab
  3. The SmartArt gallery appears displaying graphics suitable for a list of items

    Click More SmartArt Graphics to see the full list of graphics available for use

  4. Select a graphic from the gallery
  5. The bulleted list is transformed into the requested Smartart graphic.
