Animate Charts and Diagrams

All content on a slide can be animated, you are not limited to only animating bulletted text. Some very good effects can be achieved when animating charts and diagrams in a presentation.

Apply animation to a chart

  1. Select the chart you want to animate
  2. Click Slide Show > Custom Animation
  3. Click the Add Effect button in the Custom Animation task pane
  4. Select Entrance and then the animation effect of your choice
  5. Adding an Entrance effect

The effect is applied to the chart so that the chart appears on the slide On Click. The effect options can be changed to have the chart data appear on the slide by series or by category.

  6. Click on the list arrow on the animation that was just applied and select Effect Options
  7. Chart effect options
  8. Click the Chart Animation tab in the dialogue box that appears
  9. Click on the Group chart list arrow and select the option of your choice
  10. Chart animation options

Upon selection PowerPoint will display a preview of the effect

The options you see depend on the chart type used and also the animation effect chosen. Some effects do not provide any options

Apply animation to a diagram

A presentation's diagram such as an organisational chart or cycle diagram can be animated in much the same way.

With an effect already applied to the diagram:

  1. Click the list arrow for the diagram's animation effect in the Custom Animation task pane
  2. Select Effect Options from the list
  3. Click the Graphic Animation tab
  4. Click the Group diagram list arrow and select the option of your choice
  5. The options you see depend on the diagram being used and also the animation effect chosen. The images below show the options for animating an organisational chart (left) and a Venn diagram (right)
