Excel File Protection
Workbooks can be protected to prevent unauthorised changes.
A password can be set to prevent unauthorised users from opening the workbook, or to ensure they can only open a read only copy.
Save and protect a workbook
- Click the Office Button and then click Save As
- Click Tools > General Options
- Enter a password in the Password to open and/or Password to modify fields
- Click Ok
- Re-enter the password
- Click Ok
- Finish saving the workbook as normal

The Confirm Password dialogue box is displayed
On opening the workbook the user will be prompted to enter a password. In the image below the user has the option of opening a read only workbook, or entering a password to open it for modifying.
Protect an existing workbook
- Click the Office Button, select Prepare and click Encrypt Document
- Enter a password
- Click Ok
- Re-enter the password in the Confirm Password dialogue box
- Click Ok
The Encrypt Document dialogue box appears
