Working with Chart Labels

You can add and edit individual chart labels such as chart titles, axis titles and data labels.

Adding a chart title

  1. Select the chart
  2. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click Chart Title from the Labels group

  4. Select a position for the chart title from the menu
  5. Enter a chart title (this will appear in the formula bar) and press Enter

To remove the chart title, select None from the Chart Title menu.

To format the chart title, select More Title Options from the Chart Title menu and make the necessary changes in the Format Chart Title dialogue box.

Adding an axis title

You can add, remove and position labels for the axes of a chart.

  1. Select the chart
  2. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click Axis Titles from the Labels group

  4. Select an axis title from the options in the menu
  5. Enter the axis title (this will appear in the formula bar) and press Enter

To remove an axis title, select None from the relevant axis title menu.

Modifying the legend

  1. Select the chart
  2. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click Legend from the Labels group

  4. Select a position for the legend, or select None to remove the legend

    5. To format the legend further, select More Legend Options.

Adding data labels

Data labels are used to label the values of a charts data series.

  1. Select the chart
  2. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click Data Labels from the Labels group

  4. Select a position for the data labels from the menu
  5. The data labels are displayed on the chart

    6. Click More Data Label options for further display options such as changing the data type to a percentage or removing decimal places.

Adding a data table

A data table is the table of data on the worksheet that makes up the chart data.

  1. Select the chart
  2. Click the Layout tab under Chart Tools on the Ribbon
  3. Click Data Table from the Labels group

  4. Select the option you want from the menu
  5. The data table is displayed below the chart

    6. Click More Data Table Options for further display options for the data table.
